Breeders
Oil on canvas

I was making a series in 2002 of the last man on Earth, from observation [Frank from Observation series (2002)], but I was interested in making more figures out of him. I was thinking about a group, and what could be a group, and I thought: “oh, either a band, or a family.” This is a painting of him, as the band The Breeders, sort of made out of his body parts. So that’s Kim and Kelley Deal in the painting, and these two purple shapes are each a half of his body. I think the thing that is interesting about painting is that it’s a space that can parallel the world, that the world can be rearranged within that space, and I think about that too in terms of the choice of how to depict the world. So the trees are painted with a certain kind of speed, and each element in the painting has its own kind of way of being painted.
